Dance Etiquette 101

Dancing with a partner is built on mutual respect, clear communication, and shared joy. Whether you're new or experienced, here’s how we keep our dance floor at Baila District safe, welcoming, and fun for everyone.

Be Presentable and Clean
Wear dance-appropriate clothing and shoes. Bring a towel or change of clothes if you sweat a lot, and use deodorant. Fresh breath is appreciated—mints or gum help!

Respect the Dance Floor

  • The floor is for dancing—please move to the side if you're chatting or resting.

  • Keep drinks and personal items off the floor to avoid accidents.

  • Don’t wear outdoor or sticky shoes while dancing.

Give Encouragement, Not Feedback
Offer compliments or a smile after a dance—but avoid teaching or correcting your partner on the floor. Let the instructors do the teaching.

Protect Your Partner
Leaders: Shoulder check before moving your partner.
Followers: You can help by gently signaling if someone is behind your lead.
We’re all responsible for each other’s safety.

Be Aware of Your Space
In crowded rooms, try to stay within your lane. If you bump someone, apologize—even if it wasn’t your fault. Everyone appreciates courtesy.

Ask Politely, Accept “No” Gracefully
Anyone can ask anyone to dance.
“No” is a complete sentence—please respect it without pressure.
If you decline a dance, it’s kind to take a short break before dancing with someone else nearby.
If you're turned down, don’t take it personally.

Social Dance Code of Conduct

At our social dance events, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all participants. To ensure a positive experience for everyone, please adhere to the following code of conduct:

Consent Is Key

  • Always ask before initiating a dance.

  • Respect verbal and non-verbal cues.

  • “No” means “No”—no guilt trips, pressure, or persistence.

Respect Personal Space

  • Check that your moves are comfortable and appropriate for your partner.

  • Avoid lifts, dips, tricks, or close moves without mutual agreement.

  • Stay attuned to your partner’s reactions and adjust if needed.

Inclusive and Kind Vibes Only

  • Welcome dancers of all levels, backgrounds, and identities.

  • Encourage and uplift—don’t judge, gatekeep, or exclude.

  • Say hi to someone new!

Communication = Connection

  • Share preferences kindly (e.g., “I’m not comfortable with dips”).

  • Use respectful words and tone.

  • If something doesn’t feel right during a dance, you can stop or switch partners—no explanation needed.

Dance Floor Awareness

  • Keep your movements compact when it’s crowded.

  • Adjust your dancing if someone is close by.

  • Leads and follows both help keep each other safe.

Enjoy the Party Responsibly

  • If you drink, know your limits and stay respectful.

  • Refrain from any behavior that could make others feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe.

Speak Up, Look Out

  • If you experience or witness any behavior that violates this code, please let us know.

  • You can report it in person, or anonymously via our anonymous reporting form.

❤️ Keeping our space safe is everyone’s responsibility—not just the organizers’. If you feel something’s off, trust your gut and speak up.

By participating in our social dance events, you agree to uphold this code of conduct, contributing to a vibrant and respectful dance community. Thank you for your cooperation!
